Frequently Asked Questions: Pitching Machine

Q: My child is a really good player and would be able to play in a higher level of Little League. Can she “play up” despite her age?
A: No.  Our League follows the "age determination date" set by Little League International in each division. Age eligibility is determined by a player’s age as of April 30, 2009. No exceptions are made.

Q: My child just misses the cut-off date to play in the next higher division by a few days. Can he sign up for the higher division?
A: No. Our League follows the "age determination date" set by Little League International in each division. Age eligibility is determined by a player’s age as of April 30, 2009. No exceptions are made.

Q: already registered my child to play Pitching Machine, but now he’s changed his mind and doesn’t want to play. Can I get a refund?
A: Little league does not issue any refunds.

Q: Is there a draft for Pitching Machine?
A: No, there is no draft for Pitching Machine. All players who sign up prior to the registration deadline are placed on a team.

Q: Can I make a special request of which teams my son will play on?
A: Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate requests for specific team placement.

Q: How do I ensure that my child is playing on a team of my choosing?
A: If you volunteer as either a Head Coach or an Assistant Coach your son will play on the team in which you are volunteering.

Q: Can my son ‘play down’ in Coach Pitch rather than play Pitching Machine?
A: If you would like your child to play in the Coach Pitch league, rather than Pitching Machine for personal reasons, please contact the Pitching Machine Commissioner directly to discuss the situation.

Q: When do Pitching Machine practices start?
A: Practices are scheduled to begin the week approximately two weeks after registration closes and we have teams formed.  Your coach will contact you regarding practice times and locations.

Q: Where are Pitching Machine games played?
A: Pitching Machine games will be played at Woodside Elementary (McCovey Field) and also at Oak Knoll School in Menlo Park.  A third field may also be used to fill in for Portola Valley Town Center which will not be available to the league this year so no games will be played there.

Q: When are games and practices?
A: There are two games per week and an optional practice time.  There will be at least one game on Saturday and a second game during a weekday.  Weekday games start at 5:15 PM.  Weekend games are scheduled in the morning through to early afternoon.

Q: How many games are in the Pitching Machine season?
A: In 2006 there were 13 games. We project we will have time for approximately 16 games over the season.

Q: How many teams are in the Pitching Machine League?
A: Depending upon the number of players registered for the league we anticipate having between 10 to 12 teams

Q: How does Pitching Machine differ from the Coach Pitch?
A: The principal difference between Pitching Machine and Coach Pitch is that pitches come from a pitching machine instead of from a coach.  The machine pitches at a speed that is commensurate with the skill level of 8 year olds in the league.  The machine pitches reasonably consistently with pitches most pitches over the plate at a speed that the kids can hit the ball.

The Pitching Machine and coach Pitch leagues are both instructional leagues.  Scores are not kept there are no league standings.  All players are given equal opportunity and to the maximum extent possible, equal playing time.
